Healthy Communities through the Brooklyn Community Foundation
Brooklyn Community Foundation is connecting innovative efforts around food, open space, and fitness in three neighborhoods with high concentrations of public housing developments–Red Hook, Fort Greene, and Brownsville—to empower residents to enrich their environments and strengthen their communities, while developing new ways for nonprofits and city agencies to work together to improve public health.
The three year project, launched in 2013, will bring together four neighborhood-based nonprofits, Added Value, Myrtle Ave Revitalization Project, Brownsville Initiative, and Brooklyn Food Coalition, and two city agencies, the New York City Housing Authority and Brooklyn District Public Health Office, to facilitate visible change with urban farms and gardens, affordable produce markets, improvements to school food, fitness groups, and more. The project will also focus on revealing new resident voices committed to the health of their communities through policy, advocacy, and outreach efforts.

Want some more verbage about the BCF? Maybe some good fodder for your email campaign! Just copy and paste people! We’ll be highlighting some of their local grant programs between now and FGB to let you know what kinds of impacts they’re making in our community!

Brooklyn Community Foundation is dedicated to improving lives and strengthening communities through local giving, grantmaking, and community service. Establish in 2009 as the first and only charitable foundation for New York City’s largest borough, the Foundation has granted nearly $20 million in partnership with generous donors to address critical community needs and advance innovative nonprofit programs. In response to Superstorm Sandy’s devastating impact in Brooklyn’s coastal neighborhoods, the Foundation launched the Brooklyn Recovery Fund. To date, more than $3.5 million has aided families and small businesses through the efforts of over 50 community-based organizations. Learn more at www.BrooklynCommunityFoundation.org. “Impossible to Describe”

(Or, how not to explain Crossfit to your friends)
By Dr. Mike Cutatia

Sometimes, a friend will ask me what exactly do we do in the gym. One of my responses goes like this: “We are two sled-dogs lead by a smiling musher (David or Noah) with a whip…” Usually, this is followed by a prolonged silence, and I know that once again I have screwed up recruiting someone into Crossfit. Oh well. I happen to think that’s very descriptive and accurate (except for the whip part…). Its a good thing I don’t work for an advertising firm. I would be the anti-Christ of product sales. A short, but happy career.
How about this alternative: “Our coaches delight in thinking up weird positions to get into, or impossible movements to perform in the shortest amount of time. Imagine thirty people in a room wrestling with bars, plates, ropes, balls, until they are ready to puke”. Actually, I have not seen anyone puke in our gym-except David. I will never forget this. He went running past me one day out the front of the gym with a gastrointestinal face of pure agony. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry with him.
or this:“There are all these people sweating, grunting, and groaning in pain while lifting and banging down heavy things … “. That’s quite accurate, don’t you think? Now, speaking personally, if anyone every described their gym to me like that I would run, not walk, to find out what the heck was going on in a place like that.
But, sometimes, I just mumble-“its impossible to describe”-and walk away.

Bethany E training hard through her second pregnancy at CFSBK

  • Team CFSBK has broken the 20K mark for Fight Gone Bad Fundraising… Amazing!
  • Sadly, there is no Active Recovery this evening as the coaches Fox are off wandering around the desert. We apologize for the inconsistency of AR the last couple weeks while DO and Fox have been off fighting evil outside of CFSBK. Normal scheduling will resume this Saturday.

Upcoming Training Template

The next cycle begins on Sunday the 13th. We’ll be working off a similar template to the previous cycle and expanding upon some of movements we’ve been biasing the last 6 weeks.

Monday: Inversion Strength Biased Training

Wednesday: Cleans, Front Squats and DIY finishers

Thursday: Mixed modal conditioning

Saturday: Snatches, Back Squats and DIY finishers

Sunday: Mixed modal conditioning

10/29/13 C.R.A.S.H.-B Info Session

The SBK Indoor Rowing Team is mounting its fifth CRASH-Bs campaign! CRASH-Bs is the premier indoor rowing championship, held in Boston each year in February; the 2014 date hasn’t been finalized, but it’s generally on the Sunday of Presidents Day weekend, which will be Feb. 16th.

Coach Nick will lead the team through a program based on his training regimen when he was competing at the olympic level. The participants will meet up for three group technique clinics (each of which will conclude with a workout), plus four team races at the gym. Nick will post a program for each week, and will provide support throughout the next few months for the team. Members will perform the majority workouts on their own. We will provide a plan on how to intergrate them into your CrossFit Group Classes.

The cost of the program is $200. Various payment installment options are available. The fee does not include the CRASH-Bs entry fee ($25), travel to Boston, or hotel.

If you’re interested, come to Nick’s kick-off meeting at 2:15 on Saturday, Oct. 26th. He’ll explain the program in detail and answer questions. (Oh, and at the end, you’ll race 2000m.) Send Nick an email at nick [at] crossfitsouthbrooklyn [dot] com if you plan to show up or if you have any questions.

To read some testimonials from last year’s competitors about their experience with this program, check out the Event Page.

Nicole Carroll, Eva T, and Annie Sakamoto take on this classic WOD. This video was a lot of old school CrossFitters first introduction into the methodology.  It’s still an amazing and inspirational video. If you’ve never seen it, watch it all the way through.

  • CROSSFIT TOTAL today. At 1:30 Coach Jeremy’s Strength Cyclers will take a crack at new 1RMs in the Squat, Press and Deadlift. All are encouraged to come on down and check out the barbell madness! Good luck to all competing!
