Happy Birthday, Aileen H!
CFSBK at C.R.A.S.H.-B.’s in 2014
The SBK Indoor Rowing Team is mounting its fifth CRASH-Bs campaign! CRASH-Bs is the premier indoor rowing championship, held in Boston each year in February; the 2014 date hasn’t been finalized, but it’s generally on the Sunday of Presidents Day weekend, which will be Feb. 16th.
Coach Nick will lead the team through a program based on his training regimen when he was competing at the olympic level. The participants will meet up for three group technique clinics (each of which will conclude with a workout), plus four team races at the gym. Nick will post a program for each week, and will provide support throughout the next few months for the team. Members will perform the majority workouts on their own. We will provide a plan on how to intergrate them into your CrossFit Group Classes.
The cost of the program is $200. Various payment installment options are available. The fee does not include the CRASH-Bs entry fee ($25), travel to Boston, or hotel.
If you’re interested, come to Nick’s kick-off meeting at 2:15 on Saturday, Oct. 26th. He’ll explain the program in detail and answer questions. (Oh, and at the end, you’ll race 2000m.) Send Nick an email at nick [at] crossfitsouthbrooklyn [dot] com if you plan to show up or if you have any questions.

I posted this on the event page for CRASHB but hadn't gotten a response… I was just curious, is this open to anyone interesting in devoting the time, or do you have to already be a pretty good rower? Is there a certain "buy-in" like a 2K under 8 mins or anything like that to sign up?

Make up post from yesterday
WOD @ #83 12:34
DB press w/ 17.5's
went way too light on the DB's, did every round unbroken.
Was doing the cleans as 2-s and 3-s touch and go until the last round of 10. Probably could have gone to 93, would like to try this wod again one day… was super fun

First, HAPPY BIRTHDAY AILEEN!!!
@Ruth there are no special prerequisites for CRASH-B, just a love for the erg or a longing to love to hate the erg. But seriously it doesn't matter what your current 2k time is or the current state of your rowing form or knowledge, it's for anyone who wants to do it and you can learn everything as you go through the program. Last year I went into it with just my 3 months of CrossFit rowing experience and not having really tested a 2k before. Do it! And at the end you will know what it takes to make the erg cry.

Ruth: what Gina said. Hope you can make it this Saturday – shoot me an email to confirm.

8:30 last night with DO.
This was one of those classes that reminded me why I love the CF methodology and the CFSBK community in particular.
First, there's the simplicity of the ascending and descending ladders. Then, the contrast between a graceful bodyweight movement and a violent barbell lift. Last, there's the hurt. And there was a lot of hurt last night.
I did the first 40 HSPUs with one abmat before switching to two. My kickups were deteriorating and my hand position was inconsistent. When I was positioned correctly and kicking up and out on the kip, I was knocking out triples deep into the workout. Otherwise I was failing at singles or falling off the wall. The cleans were a respite and were unbroken into the seventh round.
After David extended the cap, he came over and whispered that I was going to finish the workout. And so after all the bars were cleaned up, there I was, finishing the few handstand push-ups I had left and trying to finish off the cleans in as few sets as possible.
I really appreciate all the encouragement that come from the class last night. Special shout out to Joel who was the voice in my ear to stay safe on the kickups and Jen for beasting through the end, too. Once again I was reminded what a special place the gym is for allowing people to push through those challenging moments in a supportive environment.

Science experiment in progress: I just knocked down a Kettlebell Kitchen lunch that was, well, several days past its use-by date (I was starving). In general, it tasted OK. I'll report back with any medium- to long-term consequences.
Jon Shea says
My right hand got a little tingly during the workout yesterday. When I got home I found that I had a pretty big bump on my right clavicle. I thought at first it might be broken, but it’s not unstable, it doesn’t hurt at all, and it seems better today than it did last night. So, I’m leaning towards thinking it’s not serious. Anyone else ever get anything like this?
Also, that “Planned Obsolescence” is ludicrous.

Jon: As a car nut, I think about planned obsolescence a lot, as it was a hallmark of the American auto industry in the 70s and 80s and the reason American cars became so crappy.
It is also why I don't own any Apple products, as they are the current vanguard of PO type thinking. Unupgradeable machines, sealed batteries, and locked down featuresets, no thanks. The first iPad had a camera, which Apple REMOVED so they could sell the iPad 2 a year later. Bogus.
(I'm sure as a tech guy you know this, but just sayin)
I'm sick, so starting a blog war with Apple fanboys will be my exercise for today.

That Planned Obsolescence” video started out ok but started going downhill after a few minutes. Basically it was like me on any workout.

Worked up to 220 on tomorrow's High Hang Squat Clean. Failed at 231. Should have had that but didn't get under it enough.
Front Squat – Failed on 231 (again) Was too aggressive in my jump and had a bad first rep that took a lot out of me to recover. Would have it if I tried again I think.

Ahem, @Noah. Or Apple fangirls. I'm biting & taking the bait.
While planned obsolescence is no bueno for consumers – and arguably, industries at large – I don't think that Apple operates by that principle. Jobs & Wozniak (much more so Jobs) felt insanely strongly about building their devices with such a high degree of control – and with plans to so frequently retune the specs of said devices – because they wanted to create a better user experience than ever before for their customers.
Of course, they have a vested interest in selling more stuff to make more money – Economics 101. But Apple excels because they work harder than any other company to holistically create an end-to-end experience and actually solve problems for their consumers, inspiring a high level of devotion. The UX is what gets people to return.
Yes, I work in marketing, and yes, I work for Apple's largest VAR, so feel free to write me off as a Kool-Aid peddler. 🙂 But I believe the above to be true.
And now, back to furiously writing about Apple elsewhere in light of today's announcements.

How 'bout them apples? says
I love all types of Apples and I agree with the P.O. tag. For awhile I though that Red Delicious were the foshizzle! Then while sampling my way through the GAP Farmer's Market I was introduced to the Gala..OMG! Never looked back at my Red Delicious Apple. I even had a special Apple pealer that only worked with the Red Delicious model. Didn't care anymore. Sold it on Gazelle. Bought a brand new Apple pealer for the new Gala. Even picked up Apple corer too. So, 2 weeks ago, I'm up in Warwick, NY at a place that is some type of Apple Utopia called Applewoods and BAM!!!! P.O. Stikes again! New Apple…Honey Crisp!!! Will this Planned Obsolescence ever end!!!
Noah says
Yes, there was an announcement today. Apple's new iPad, the Air, is 2mm thinner than the old one. It costs $500. That's $250 per mm.
Court- I agree that Apple works for a high level of control, but not in the way you mean it. When you contrast them against any sort of open-source model, they seem very authoritarian. Call me an old fashioned, small D democrat.
I'm typing this on a Mac. (I'm at school!) Also, this argument would be very different if I was in any sort of design/creative field.

6:30 with Josh and Jess. I did yesterday's wod with piked handstand push-ups and 95# power cleans. 14:11. Nice elegant workout. I'd never done more than 30 cleans at that weight at a time, so was a little nervous going in. Had to break the last set up into doubles and singles, but not as bad as I thought it would be.

Wow, so many good things happening here today. Aileen's birthday, street gymnastics (which is really beach gymnastics in thong bikinis), talking iPads and apples, a fight about Apple, and deep thoughts about planned obsolescence. And Kim's potential paleo food poisoning. Never a dull moment.
7:30 with Josh. Did Monday's WOD just under 15 min at 78# cleans and piked HSPU, both of which I wished looked more elegant throughout. Good things to keep working on. Some work afterwards in my solo pull-up club.

More cleans tonight! Followed performance programming. Worked up to 118 for a high hang clean. Jess said a few of my earlier reps were a little low (meaning I was creeping into mid hang territory), but I made sure she watched my last one and it was legit. So I'm very happy about that.
I was pretty beat for FSQ. Worked up to 103×5.
I'm digging the DIY cash-out stuff. It's always fun to get a little extra movement in.

Love the photo. And happy birthday Aileen!
Looking back I can't believe there was a time when I used to like McIntosh apples. I'm surprised they even still make those.
Yesterday's work-out – 17:58. I expected to like this one. 2 things I liked that I didn't expect:
– felt my entire core working during both of these movements, back, sides, stomach, all the way around.
– my elbows felt like they were flying up on the last few cleans, like faster than ever before, possibly to compensate for fatigue everywhere else, or maybe just finally getting it after so much repetition.
HSPU: Kipping,1 abmat. First 10 unbroken, broke up the next few until 5 and kept it unbroken thereafter.
Power Cleans: 95#. I felt a little dizzy going from upside-down to right-side-up, and I tend to over-organize my cleans so I bailed, stood up and re-set almost every single one.
I could have saved time by stringing more of the PCs together. When I reached the larger sets and saw that I was within the 20 min cap, I was just thrilled that I was going to finish at 95# and wasn't really worried about time. But now I want to name that work-out and keep trying to do it faster.
