A blast from the past
CFSBK started with one coach and one member in a playground and has since flourished into a thriving little gym on Degraw street. While the faces, locations and equipment have evolved over the years, what has never changed is that every single day people show up with the intention of getting better through hard work. We would like to take this moment to acknowledge your efforts and thank you for contributing to our collective history. We’re proud of everyone who consider themselves a CFSBKer and are excited about all the new experiences on the horizon!
Rest Day WOD:
Acknowledge someone special in your life today. Tell them why you’re proud of them and what they mean to you. Yesterday a lot of folks mentioned that they would have told their 15 year old selves that “things would work out” in the long run. Perhaps you could acknowledge someone who helped you get where you are today. Maybe there’s someone you know who could use that advice now.

HOLIDAY COOKIE EXCHANGE!!
Do you bake a metric ton of cookies every year? I do.
Do you want to give some of them away and try new ones? What a coincidence, I do too 🙂
Email me at mignyc (at) gmail dot com to let me know you are interested; we'll settle on a date and time (likely sometime in the final two weeks before Christmas) that suits everyone.
OXOXO

here's a good rest day video to share — donny shankle – hand care. i've had some issues with a broken callus recently so i'm trying to stay on top of taking care of my hands to prevent it from happening again.

I think someone may have asked this question before, but I don't remember ever seeing the answer. Is flavored seltzer bad for you, in the same way that diet soda is bad for you (in terms of insulin response, etc etc etc)?
JJ says
(because when one of the two ingredients is just "natural flavor", i have no idea what that means. How can "flavor" be an ingredient?)

The 24 inch box jumps today were def. the push for me.
7rounds plus 12 box jumps
I need to practice my press to handstands more I use to love doing them.
I will acknowledge my parents since they are always there for me.
6 years ago I would never of thought I would be where I am in my life. a year ago I was facing the same feelings on with a different perspective. Don't doubt yourself or your goals. Just know some take longer and more effort to get to than others and make sure you are happy along the way to your goal or its not going to be worth it in the end.

Opening January 2012 and located in the heart of the Financial District, CrossFit Gold St will be over 3 times as large as the next biggest CrossFit Gym in NYC. We will bring CrossFit to the masses of NYC.
JJ says
Damn, that is REALLY close to my office… If I weren't so attached to the CFSBK community…

whatever, they won't have bitchin cookie exchanges, jj.

Hello good people of SBK! With all your diversity and experience, I wonder whether someone out there might be able to recommend a very good resume service OR happens to be highly skilled at crafting them.
(Don't worry, I am not seeking a job at another CrossFit.)
Feel free to email me at Margie (at) crossfitsouthbrooklyn dot com
Much appreciated!

Margie I can take a look at it and comment if you like.

crossfit joints in the city are totally mean. i like my cozy brooklyn crew where everyone has bedhead.
Jules says
JJ – are you talking Canada Dry flavoured seltzer or that stuff that you can add to Soda Stream? Here, this might help: http://www.naturalingredient.org/Articles/naturalflavors.html
I use a soda stream and if I want flavour I toss in a little green tea or squeeze a bit of fruit in. If i'm feeling poncey then I'll muddle fruit and herbs and top with the bubbles.
JJ says
I'm talking flavored seltzer you buy at the store, like Canada Dry.
Fox says
I am not afraid of flavored seltzer, I have larger worries and can't sweat that stuff. In some extreme cases though, just sweet smells and flavors can trigger an insulin response even in absence of actual sugar/carbs. Last year when I was on the wagon Charlotte bought me some sugar and alcohol-free bitters to flavor the stuff with. It was awesome!
Gold street is probably going to be pretty rad. I don't know Dave but he seems like my kind of guy, and Craig from CF Hoboken is legit. We'll see.

1. I'm interpreting that bedhead comment to mean me, or at least include me which seems to always be the case.
2. Looking forward to CFGst. Hope them the best of success!
3. I did my Front Squats today at 175x3x5 taken from the floor. I figure if I can power clean it why use a rack. I'm excited to back squat again soon!
4. If I could have given my 15 year old self some advice it would have been to go out of my way and try to connect with as many people as possible. People are incredible! Also to not stress out over girls so much.
5. I prefer unflavored seltzer to flavored. I like it when it's so carbonated it makes your face well up and your eyes hurt.
6. Im going to take care of today's RWOD tomorrow when Sam is home

Obit from today's Times:

I remember watching him in the '76 olympics and Wild World of Sports saturday afternoons on ABC. Dude was strong. But it wasn't till I came here that I truly learned what amazing athletes these olympic lifters are. This guy could snatch around 400#. I'm lucky to max out at 40#.
I'd like to acknowledge my wife who signed my more-flabby-then-than-now ass up at this gym a couple years ago.

Um, WIDE World of Sports. Sheesh. Need more beer.
Spanning the globe to give you the constant variety of sport… the thrill of victory… and the agony of defeat.

Go Laurel!
NY definitely needs some more good gyms, so I wish those downtown folks all the best, besides– not that I want to lose any of you beautiful people to another gym– but we need more space, not more people!
I didn't get to do today's Rest day WOD, but I appreciate the sentiment and definitely will connect with a couple of good, old friends (including my sister who turned me onto Minor Threat 19 years ago amongst other amazing influences, musical and otherwise). Which I guess takes me back to almost 15 when I'd tell myself to chill the fuck out and stop worrying what other people think.
Love the WW of Sports reference. For some reason that was awesome and can't really be duplicated.

Keep your cookies away from me. I'm actually eating better and losing some fat.

How about a workout log?
Box Squats: 195x5x2
10 pound jump. Felt solid, organized and more explosive. I like.
Bench: 190×5 and 190×4(f) and 175×6
Suck fest. My left shoulder is giving out. Alec could explain, but it's a bummer that I got 195x5x2 and now can't get this. Will have to consider an intermediate program (RE: slower progress) for the bench. Normally I would not even do a set after, but figured WTF.
Chins: 5, 3, 3. The 3's were with an alternate grip (left arm pull, right arm chin) due to my f-ed up forearm. Meant to do a 4th set but socialized instead. 5 on the chins means I lost some weight.

This cycle has become about regaining better body comp, reducing pain and maintaining strenth. Goal one is moving ahead, goal two seems pretty tough to attain and I think I'll be strong enough to enter 2012 without fear of the apocalypse. Come and get me motherfuckin' zombies– I dare ya!
