I did the first crashb WOD this morning, as RX’d. around a 2:10 pace for the 10 minute piece. Keeping a constant, 15ish stroke rate and adjusting my split time, even keeping a constant split time at all, was a lot harder than I anticipated, especially during the warmup/cooldown where you have to move it by 10 seconds.
I am just not used to rowing at that stroke rate at all. Really tried to feel every stroke the whole way, but I estimate about 20% of my strokes were actually good/correct. very easy to lose focus.

An open letter to all my Crossfit South Brooklyn friends: Next week is the Jewish New Year which is traditionally celebrated by prayer, reflection and introspection, and food-lots of it. In my case, this year’s food selections will be paleo for the most part, as I have recently discovered a new way of eating. This past year was a very challenging one for my family both economically and personally-we lost a number of people we were close to, most of them taken at an age I would consider way too young. The thing is, that throughout it all,one of the steady, reliable things has been our gym, where for a couple of hours each week I get to challenge myself, let it all hang out and act like a kid in a playground. And ever so slowly, I am getting stronger and more fit, physically and mentally. Along the way I have made some really good friends. So thanks to Coach David and the rest of the CSB family for having me. It’s really been a blast and I look forward to more of the same next year.Filthyfifty

I’ll be at Brooklyn Boulders tonight if anyones interested in climbing around!
@Jack: your thoughtfulness made me smile. Having the support of a great community is priceless.

Jack,
Thank you for your kind words. You and I both came to SBK for the very first time on the same day and slogged through Eva together. Then you were gone for a long stretch and I remember thinking ‘Whatever happened to that old guy?’ And then ‘boom’ you were back in an BIG way. Since then it has been great to see you grow as an athlete and become part of the SBK family. I’m honored that the gym has been not only a source of strength (physical/mental) but also of solace and stability in unstable and difficult times. There is no higher compliment or validation of what we do than that. Thanks for everything you bring to the commmunity. Wishing you and everyone else a Happy New Year.
Happy Birthday Tal! Hope you’re enjoying your time in Israel.
Regan and I will also be at Brooklyn Boulders tonight around 6 or 6:30 for some quality climbing time. Would love to see you all out there.

Jack,
My paleo brother!I used to preach about the power of baseball to change a person’s life. Now I can add the power of crossfit as well. You have become a big part of the community and we all love you.
As you become a smaller person physically you become a larger person to those around you. Jacinto is going to have some serious competition pretty soon.
Keep it up!Younger every year!!!

Malcolm, Those look damn tasty!

The mushrooms are amazing. We ate half of them cooked in about 2/3 of a stick of butter with some onions and garlic and sour cream tonight. It was ambrosial.
Actually if someone is missing pasta with cream sauce this makes a divine substitute.
I think I will hopefully have the presence of mind to actually photograph them tomorrow.
And for those keeping track at home, today was day 60 of my 60 day paleo challenge. Other than one weekend where I binged too heavily on Ethiopian I stuck to my guns and had only one cheat meal a week.
I think tomorrow I will have a gin and tonic!
Shane says
Simply awesome Malcolm. Your personal challenge was a big influence in my decision to clean up my dietary act. The big 6-0. Good stuff.
I’ve experienced amazing gains in the terms of performance in the gym, have leaned out and increased my overall energy and feeling of well-being since abstaining from booze and eating (in an 80/20 fashion) paleo-inspired. I’m still doing grass-fed dairy (Milk Thistle, holler!) and I’ll cheat every so often but I’m not feeling like I’m counting the days for cheat meals or anything like I have in the past. Gonna ride this pony right through FGB and beyond. Really glad to see a good number of folks dialing in their nutrition and wish folks beginning their personal challenges this week great success!
Had a big crew at BKB tonight. Some old heads and some fresh faces. Good times.
See y’all tomorrow
