Get well soon to Bethany B. who dropped a knife on her foot and Allan E. who d broke his leg dancing. Yikes!
What was a really enjoyable meal you had out recently?

I met up with Shane, Regan, Laurel and Malcolm (5th wheel!!) after I finished my 1 one 1 sessions Tuesday night and we all got Ethiopian. It was my first time eating food from that part of the world and it was a really enjoyable experience. I really liked eating with my hands and the spongy (bread?) that you eat it with. Much to my surprise, I was totally creeped out by the raw beef. I tried one bite and was done after that. Anyway, a good meal with good friends.
Get better Bethany and Allan… I see you both are registered for FGB.. do I smell a “Fight Gone Gimp” team in the works???
Chris Fox says
Team 3, Woot Woot!!!
A Tale of 2 Pauls (and a Juliana and a Christian and a Colette).
Nah, that’s not gonna work as a team name.
Cleans should be fun tonight, my hams are sore from yesterdays warm up
David says
As mentioned in L1 yesterday, the SLDL’s are a potent little movement. We’ll be foam rolling today before cleans.
Scott says
Cleans in the a.m.5×3145, 165, 185, 195, 205
I can’t think of any really enjoyable meals of late. The only one that sticks out in my mind occurred several weeks ago when I had a filet mignon kabob on a island off of Connecticut.
Dan Rx'd says
Update from Bethany’s twitter feed:
“MRI showed complete rupture and retraction of the anterior tibial tendon. Surgery tentatively scheduled for tonight.”
Quick anatomy lesson here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tibialis_anterior_muscle
Hope the surgery goes well Bethany!
Allan, I also injured myself dancing. My shoulder injury is care of girl who wanted to do aerials but failed to mention she was scared of heights…
Hope you both heal quickly.
Dan Rx'd says
I enjoy every meal, but I had an especially good time when we all went out for dinner prior to the movie last week.
If parties are interested, I’ll be happy to put something together again in the not too distant future…
Malcolm says
David – The spongy bread is called Injera and is made from the grain Tef. Tef was likely the first grain humans ate because it grows wild in sufficient quantities to make non-agricultural harvesting practical. While most Tef is ground to make Injera a simple bread can be made by just mixing Tef with water. Tef is also the only self-yeasted grain in the world. A symbiotic yeast grows on Tef such that you will always get a yeasty bubbly bread from it, and cannot make anything without yeast. Before learning about Tef and Injera I always wondered how people first figured out about bread the first time. But now I just imagine someone who had gathered a pile of Tef which then got rained on and they attempted to dry it out to eat by putting it on a hot rock by the fire… and viola Injera.
I am hard pressed to choose a favorite recent meal out, because I have loved so many times out with crossfit friends. It really is amazingly pleasant to have a Tribe to get impromptu meals with.
But can I suggest a field trip for those of us who crave tasty burgers. Two places are currently in a death match over my heart, Diner and Dumont both in Williamsburg.

Ah, burgers. Count me in. Not next week for me though, we’re away again.
Jess and I had a really enjoyable meal at Palo Santo on union street recently. Yummy fish, fatty pork belly, spicy slaw, plantains, and some greens. Chef there went to my culinary Alma mater, which is a natural foods cookery school. Highly recommende.
David, Ghenet? Love that place too. Although I tens to eat everything, everywhere with my hands.
Anne Ishii says
David, put me in that Fight Gone Gimp crew. Jess convinced me yesterday to join this thing (thanks, Jess…), and I’ve just registered. Sorry for the late add.
Best meal out: I was alone in Milan this past May for work, so decided to treat myself to a fancy solo dinner. The restaurant owner felt sorry for me and had me join his table with his friends. Unforgettable night. It ended at 4 in the morning. None of us spoke fluently in the same language but we somehow finished a whole spine of cow and at least a gallon of wine and limoncellos each.
annemal says
Oh wow…now THAT’s a nutrition event! I haven’t been to any of those places yet.Dan, get to work!

Hopefully that is not a timed MOD (Meal of the Day). Need tasting notes and comparisons.
I for one am prepared to sacrifice my health on the alter of science.
May the best burger win.

It’s okay David, I was the 7th wheel at a birthday dinner on Tuesday (how does that even happen??).
I’ve had so many amazing meals, its hard to choose one.
For life altering tacos go to Taqueria De Los Muertos on Washington and St. Marks in Prospect Heights. Mmm.. mahi-mahi fish tacos with all the trimmings.
Fancy food wise – Dovetail was excellent, this was a few months ago. And another food standard is James, they have excellent food with fantastic ingredients (during the winter I had a cauliflower cream soup with smoked trout that was lovely).
On another note.. broke his leg dancing! Allan.. You animal!

BURGERS!!!! i’m in
Shane says
I am SO beyond in for the Burger crawl. Three Burger Joints, Two Boroughs, One Day. Done and done.
I’ve had a number of great meals of late two of which have already been mentioned.
Ethiopian at Ghenet with Regan, David, Laurel and our resident Encyclopedia Malcolm was tres delicioso. Sega Tibs…sega yes!
Palo Santo w/ a whole slew of CFSBKers before District 9 last night. I almost regretted getting the bluefish after seeing Dan and Sameer’s steaks but great googly moogly was it good once I dug into it.
See y’all tonight
Laurel says
Bethany – my god. Let us know if you need anything, food, entertainment etc.
Burgers! Can we do it over the course of a weekend rather than in the form of a pub crawl… otherwise I’d have to pretend to be at a roman feast and purge between courses (which is a rather nasty idea, but fascinating that they did it.)
My most memorable meal recently was brunch at Bonita and it wasn’t simply that they had tamales, custardy delicious tamales, stuffed with mole poblano and pork with beautiful fried eggs on the top (all local and free roaming etc.) Despite the fact that it isn’t paleo or particularly good for me, these tamales have ranked as my favorite food since I first had them a year or so ago. Anyway, The reason it was particularly memorable is that it was THE LAST TIME. My favorite restaurant and they closed – not because they weren’t successful, but because the owners want to try a new concept. GAH.
ariel says
I am in for a burger feast!
Most enjoyable meal out recently was fried clam bellies at a harbor shack in Massachusetts a few trips ago. Crispy outside, tender inside, salty with a bit of fresh lemon. Totally delicious, addictive and rather unhealthy, it’s really good I don’t know anywhere around here to get them.
Margie says
I feel like I eat homecooked tastiness all the time, but recently I ate out at Desnuda:
-oysters with dab of wasabi mayo-seared scallops sliced and dressed with a sesame sriracha and balls of avocadothen,-ceviche of tilefish in a spicy broth with medallions of sweet potato and corn nuts-free side of popcorn in truffle butter
we were still hungry so we went over to porchetta for a plate of pork belly, greens and beans.
that was a good night of eating.
Ben W says
I’ve been eating dangerous amounts of dangerously good Polish sausage from a place on 5th ave. A student of mine works there. He told me, “Mr. Ben, it is the best sausage in New York.” It took me one bite to agree.
I can’t make class tonight, because guys are coming to fix the air conditioning (thank god). This gives me a chance to get reacquainted with my 100 lb sand bag. Woohoo!
paul says
for sarah’s bday we went to veritas and had the 9 course tasting menu. it was pretty great, def the best meal I’ve had since we went to blue hill at stone barns for my bday last year.
going to class this morning made me really hungry for the rest of the morning! usually I am fine from breakfast until lunch, but not after this morning’s class. carrots + homemade babaghanoush and mixed nuts as a snack.

Count me in for the Burger crawl as well.Should we bike between places for time?

I’m embarrassed for Matt for not chiming in about the burger tour, considering he runs an underground burger tour fight club thing or something.

Clean 5×3 95-100-105-110-115. Went down on weight to work on much needed form improvement. It worked! Gonna increase weight a bit more every time. Finally felt like I had good mechanics. Great feeling. Thanks to Cloyde and David for the pointers.
Made some delicious Tandorean Chicken with Paleo Curry Rice. Found the recipe on a CrossFit site. Weighed my portions into zone friendly blocks. Entire meal was Paleo.

Oh yeah, injera is oddly delicious. Enjoyable meal: it was a quick and cheap one but a good one — tacos at that new taqueria Oaxaca on Smith Street http://www.ihearttacos.com/oaxaca-on-smith-street-is-good

75, 85, 85, 95, 100. I know these are small numbers, but I’m feeling absurdly pleased that I managed to actually do some real work on cleans. I’m pretty sure my form is a long way from dialed in, but I’m glad to have started on this.
Great working out with Anne, our FGB captain!
Many, many thanks to Asta for her help with the SDHP (another FGB team member!). I need to do more practice on this as well.

I love cleans. Felt pretty good tonight.
Warmed up then 135×3,155×3,170×2, 175x3PR,180×0.
Prior to this cycle 165 was my 1RM. So I am super excited for next week to find out my new 1 RM.
Then did a little muscle up practice and some front lever practice and rowed 1000m. Trying to improve my rowing technique which is horrible.
New goal, every time I come to the lyceum do at least one thing I hate. Rowing, wall ball and double unders are all prime targets.
Chris Fox says
Didn’t feel 100% tonight on cleans. Wound up only getting to 165, trying to focus on FULL HIP EXTENSION.
Shane – thanks for the help on SDHP.
Now, more importantly…
Stand down on University in the village has pretty freaking good burgers. Although I’ve become quite the Brooklyn snob.
Korzo (formerly Euro Trip), a 5th ave South Park Slope place, has an amazing deep fried burger (and great European beers, Dave McG). It’s grilled, then fried wrapped in a wierd Hungarian bread, usually with some fine condiments (read bacon, pickles) inside. They have a few other, more moderate, choices as well for those of you with more moderate tastes and hearts.
Hey, at least they use grass fed cattle!
Please don’t plan the burger crawl till next week! Jess and I get back from Mexico on Friday.
Jess says
One of the best meals of my life was the one Chris mentioned at Palo Santo two weeks ago. Started with a summer peach and pecan salad. Main course was a super fatty and utterly delicious pork belly with “piggy” rice (cooked with pork bits) and green beans (also cooked with bacon!). As if that wasn’t enough, dessert was a coffee creme brûlée. Sure the meal probably came in around 3000 calories but it was so worth it! Definite a splurge.
Oh and I’m so in for the burger crawl! I sure do love me a good burger. I would also have to suggest the burgers at Korzo (formally known as Eurotrip). They have a fried burger that is cooked so perfectly medium rare in the center. Not that I would know…

Felt good to get the 215 that I was chasing last week. Elbows just weren’t quick enough to get 220. Next week.
As for burgers, McSorley’s has a special place in my heart. It may be a non-descript standard issue greasy bar burger, but paired with a couple glasses of the dark, mmmm.

Damn so my computer screwed up and didnt post my other 2 posts.
1) Todays WOD:Bar Warmup then75x3, 95×3, 115×3, 125×3,135x3I couldve gone higher I think, but Im ecstatic that Im finally “getting it” with form. I think the key will be to continue to practice cleans after we finish this cycle so they dont go to shit.
2) Did Yesterdays DU/SU WODDidnt really count REPs, just tried to get it done since I missed it, and I feel like Ive missed so much lately. I dont have DUs so it was good fatigue DU work. I really like that heavy rope that whips the shit out of your leg. I didnt go as hard as I couldve, I kind of walked from station to station. My excuse is that it was hot as hell in the Lyceum and I didnt have water today.Came home and drank a bottle of Fresh Carrot Juice and then Chopped Open a Cold Cocunut, drank the water and ate the meat. Coconut Water is by far my favorite primal drink.
3) Burgers. For a local Park Slope Burger I Like Bonnie’s Grill Burgers. Some people recommend Five guys for a chain, but I dont really like their burgers. Being a Cali guy Im a die hard In n Out Burger guy. In n Out is always one of my first trips when I go home. I love their burgers so much when I didnt eat beef for a long time, Id still get a “grilled cheese” from there.
Anyone else a In n Out fan? Supposedly theres a place in Astoria called Petey’s Burgers that makes a great Knock off.http://www.yelp.com/biz/peteys-burger-astoria
Back when I lived in Inwood, this Irish Bar Piper’s Kilt was known as having the best burgers in the city.http://www.yelp.com/biz/pipers-kilt-of-inwood-inc-new-yorkTheir fries sucked ass though.
I love making my own Burgers though, it’s so easy, and can be so tasty with some fresh local ground beef. Especially good if you mix the beef and let the spices sit overnight.

I love cleans but yesterday they did not love me. I was in bad shape from food poisoning (resulting in lack of sleep) and a long day at work. Need to work on stomping and keeping my head up.
95,115,125×1,125×1 – there were tons of failed reps between those 125’s. It was frustrating because last time I got up to 132×1.. and was hoping to get that by 3. Oh well, still looking forward to singles, but need to practice a bit sometime before then.
Nice lifting with you Stephanie – it’s good to have you back.
David Mak says
So, never did full clean before and I’m not comfortable with the movement yet so practiced MHPC with Shane and the rest of the crew. Really trying to dial in form before going heavy.45, 65, 85, 95, 105 all X 5. Thanks Shane for all the help and great working with Paul and Giles.
Skinflints, 5th Ave and 80th, Brooklyn, has a great blue cheese burger, paired with a perfectly poured Guinness is a wonderful thing. Laurel, if the format is burger crawl, you can pair up with someone else that doesn’t want to gorge and go halfsies on the burgers.
Best recent meal was while on vacation and visiting in-laws on the cape. Some place in Provincetown, I had braised beef short ribs (grass fed) dusted with chipotle and cocoa. My mouth is watering typing about it.
Is anyone else’s legs smoked? Mine are crazy sore from the last two days.
Allan, Bethany, I wish you a speedy recovery.

Clearly we’re gonna have more burger joints in more parts of NYC than we might hit in one day. All the talk of a burger and a pint of black brought back memories from my homeland (County Queens), Donovan’s Pub in Woodside. How could I forget them. Great charred grill flavor. Best, burger, ever.
Maybe we can make this a 2 (or hell, even 3) part tour. I like the biking between spots idea, you know, to keep it healthy. Seriously though, it’d give us a bit of time to digest and get hungry again. I’d be happy to organize.
We could set out after Saturday classes for some post WOD nutrition.
Thoughts?
Andy says
I second Chris’ idea. Sounds really great. I won’t be back until the 22nd of September so I hope we plan more than one burger tour.
Oh, and I don’t have a bike. However, I’m willing to rent a car.
I did 5 sets of 5 cleans at a rehab clinic where I wasn’t allowed to use more than 135 lbs. (There’s no gym in my current neighbourhood.)

Had a great time lifting with Alec, who had some solid advice on posture, movement, and body positioning. Thanks again for all the great advice!
Notes:Right knee wasn’t entirely stable, a little uncomfortable coming out of the hole. The lift from the floor, into receiving felt solid. I was tempted to go for 200+ but decided to take it easy.
Legs felt horrible when coming out of the hole at 175. Then I realized I haven’t taken any rest days this week: OHS, Sprint, Press, FGB(urpee), Double Under/Situp Medley, and then the Cleans.
Taking a rest day feels so good right now.
Looking forward to tomorrow!
