Behind The Desk Series: Whitney H
Here is the next installment in our new series called Behind the Desk, about our beloved and much appreciated Front Desk staff. These CrossFitters take care of the important duties of checking in our members, handling walk-ins, tidying up after classes, and so many other things that it would take forever to list them. They are the glue that holds this gym together.
Full name: Whitney Hubbard
Where were you born and where did you grow up:
Born in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Grew up in Lake Forest, Illinois — a suburb of Chicago.
First album that you loved:
Either Ace of Base’s The Sign or Mariah Carey’s Music Box
What are you up to when you’re not at 597 Degraw Street:
Well… between the front desk, teaching Yoga for Athletes, and actually working out I spend quite a lot of time at CFSBK! Beyond that, I teach yoga in Cobble Hill and Park Slope (at studios and privately in my home and others’ homes), walk and play with my recently-adopted dog Penny, and cook as many delicious meals and treats as possible. I recently became a Level 1 CrossFit Trainer and am also currently in a yoga teacher mentorship program; I’m continually interested in how to best coach/instruct people in their pursuits of health and fitness.
“Ask me about that time I…”:
…raced Coach Noah in “suicide” wind sprints in the Key Foods parking lot after the Fight Gone Bad 2012 after-party.
Earth is about to implode but aliens on a previously undiscovered planet named Euripides want to preserve one artifact from humans. What would you offer them?
A foam-roller. Mobilize your alien business!!
Favorite shade of blue:
Teal… the blue that’s approaching green, like when sunlight shines through a wave that’s about to break.
Favorite lift:
Snatch

I had no idea what I was going to do for push jerk today. Thought it would be around 115 but worked up to 185, felt like I could have gone heavier. This is nothing like push press! Yesss.
Finished the row in 12:41.
AR after, the new space is great! Much chattier. Feelin supple.

Yesterday 10 am with Lady Fox and McD.
Push Jerk- This is a basically a new movement for me and I was probably over-thinking it a bit at first. Worked up to 93# which felt safe enough. I was wary of hurting my knee which is still pretty sore.
Did the row in 13.01 at 19SPM, and then did another 18 mins and the rest of the Crash-B's stuff.
Major thanks to Fox for helping me figure out what to work on for my knee. I am going to be as diligent with this stuff from now on as I have been with rowing recently.
AR today in the sparkly, bright, beautiful new space. I think David may have gotten into my head and designed this class especially for me and my knee. It was perfect. Thanks!!!

DIY C2B pull-ups 3×5. Too early for a New Year's resolution? Doing these more is mine, hopefully with weight added.
Power Jerk: 185 – 200 – 210(f) – 210. Took a look at my notebook, and this is a 30# PR from the last time we did this (14 months ago). Pretty cool.
The row, even at 70%, was still kind of tough.

3000m row in 13:55. Nice to keep a steady pace and just focus on form, sitting up well, staying engaged.
Rack Jerk with Nancy and Asha…
Drills @33#
53×2, 73×1, 83×1, 88×1, 93×1, 98×1
Think there was more in the tank there. It all felt good! Focused on speed/coordination and extending my hips fully before dropping under… really jumping the bar up. Yeah!

Took a good week. Really needed a break, mentally and physically before the start of a cycle…which I desperately have to fix/figure out my hip impingement or wtvr

This is above body weight and I'm pretty sure a PR. It felt good and not scary. Excited about the prospect of C&J'ing my recent clean PR of 138#.
And then I made myself a steak for the first time in my life. Ready for the cycle to begin.
