The Weight Of The Nation
Our own Kate Ba has been working on an HBO series entitled “Weight Of the Nation” which examines America’s Obesity Epidemic. Check out what she had to say about it below:
“Here is the website for the series I have been working on for the past two years. There is a trailer on the site. The series airs May 14th and 15th and the four features and 12 short films will be available free on HBO.com starting that week as well. I’m very proud of this series and I hope that we reach some people and make a difference. “
Volunteer For The CrossFit North East Regionals

Coaches David and Margie are on the event organizing team (Margie is actually at Reebok HQ today). If you’re interested in volunteering as a judge or support staff, please let us know and register here. We would appreciate it!

Hello All!!
I'm Posting from a Hostel in Amsterdam Right now. I just got into the city yesterday as the first 3 days were at the Roadburn Music Festival with 3 of my good friends. The festival was awesome, for those of you (dave t?) into heavy, sometimes slow, always sludgy Metal music, I saw the following bands:
Denovan
The Obsessed
Sleep
Bong Ripper
Church of Misery
Conan
And I missed Om by one day which was a real bummer for me as they were the band I wanted to see most. Still a great time with great friends and some city leveling bass tones and music loud and low enough to vibrate your entire body. Epic sensations!
Yesterday I got into Amsterdam and walked around the center a bit. It appears to me that this is the equivalent of our times square/mid town but with amazing architecture. Really beautiful but lots of tourists and bullshit shops. I ended up taking the Ferry across the water to see The Eye which is a film museum. There was a special exhibit on art made from found footage.. it was incredible. 16 different works and I was there for about 3 hours. The museum itself was really beautifully deigned too. If you are ever in Holland I highly recommend going to the Eye.
Today I'm off to the southern areas which appear to be the "Brooklyn" of Amsterdam (more art, less tourists, more hipsters) The area is filthy with museums and galleries so I think that will be my guiding light today. I also intend to get to CrossFit Amsterdam tonight if I can make the big loop to where it is by their evening classes. If not, then tomorrow
Hope all is well and everyone is cleaning up their cups!
I also hate not knowing how the hug a twinkies went.. more comments please!

David, I saw "Hostel." Do NOT go to Bratislava for a party!
In other news, Pat Mendes reigning U.S. weightlifting champ suspended for 2 years for using HGH. Is that wrong? Because if somebody had TOLD me that it's wrong…
Power cleans last night for the first time in a while, kept it light, around 185, and stayed classy. A couple of tweaks but form was ok. Next week I'll up the weight, and eventually start chasing the squat cleans again.
Banged away on the heavy bag afterwards.

I can't post a link to the NY Post article so please just search for "crossfit" at the nypost site.
Interesting choice of photo; strange description of CF in general; and please read the first comment on the article. <eyeroll>

Awesome David! Seriously jealous of your adventure right now – I love The Obsessed and Sleep, super sorry to hear you missed Om – saw them in the UK with Sunn O))) big bangy good times. Now you just have to go to Barcelona or something to see them. Oh no! 🙂
Not sure if you're going to be checking in again but my friend Pete lives in Amsterdam on a houseboat – he owns Slovenly Recordings. You could super geek out about music and he knows all the good stuff to do and see. I'll see if he's in town so if you have time, and he's available, ya'll can get in some trubs.

Just read the article, Ripples and bruises and simmering oh my! Too bad they weren't there for the first potluck when Luca dropped their pants to show off a leg scar. That was the kind of the best thing ever.

Wow, that reads like a…… well, a NY Post article. Sweet picture though, those people are hot! I gotta step out and buy a paper copy.
David- Hug a Twinkies were good times, actually the whole workout was. It was interesting timing for me cause I overdid KB swings and KB burpees Friday so have had a stiff lower back that recovered just in time for this. Then this morning I checked the next MobilityWOD workout (going through from the beginning) and what's it for? PSOAS! Serendipity.
Lana Z says
Noah, where the hell did that "Lifting Weights N Eatin Steaks" shirt come from? It is AMAZING!
David, never write a post like that again, I just cried a little I was so jealous! And to answer your question, hug a trinkies were the funnest! I enjoyed looking to Keith's dreamy eyes as we both hugged the same twinkie until it exploded with love.

Odd, the Facebook page for CFSBK doesn't have the wall enabled, nor can the account be tagged in any posts. Is there a reason for this? If not, @Management is missing out on Facebook (and the physical images of the article I'd like to link to).
Dan Rx'd says
OK, must have been an issue with FB; that was bizzare. Images uploaded — see the printed article in all its glory!

Trying to psychologically prep myself for coming to 6 AM class tomorrow. There's something about getting up at 5:XX AM that is mentally so much harder than 6:00, even if it's 5:59.

Good/weird story–good ol' NY Post. Glad they didn't print any of the other dumb things that came out of my mouth that night post-tequila…
I'm about to start PT for my shoulder. Does anyone have any good physical therapists to recommend? Lemme know– atilney (at) gmail (dot) com
Thanks!

Hug-a-twinkie was a good indicator of how piss poor my lower back strength is. It almost gave out during hollow rocks. I enjoyed all of the moves yesterday. Good even balance of challenging, interesting, and good indicators of where improvement may be needed.

Julie b there were cookies waiting for you at the gym. They were wilting in the heat so I put them in the fridge.

I will only speak about our box since I have so little experience with other boxes and how they conduct themselves.
The idea of puking after a workout is not encouraged and certainly nothing to be proud you caused as a coach. There are certainly things we bond over because we all struggle with the WOD as individuals but because we do it as a group it bonds us in that similar experience. We as a community take the time to get to know the people we do this with. Unlike most people in gyms across the country (world) where you just want to get on that mill or find an open bench to lift, anonymity is the norm.
It should have been pointed out to the reporter that the injury was actually not caused by crossfit and that it came from another sport as well. I understand they have editors and are looking for "what bleeds leads" but putting our box out there as someplace that could cause harm is not good for marketing be it our box's or crossfit's in general.
The idea of shunning and "punishing" newbies is also something I know first hand will ruin and destroy a community. I have never seen anything like that at our box and I certainly hope besides the joking of smile even if it hurts comments there never forms a hazing of noobs. Maybe we are just lucky in what we have built and made part of our lives there at CFSBK and there are a ton of boxes out there that are much more "in your face" and all about "punishing workouts". I think crossfitters can punish themselves enough without the need of some egofuled coach trying to push one more rep out of someone. Those kind of attitudes will get boxes closed and cause more harm than good.
just my 2cents.
Stella says
Keith, I agree that these out-of-context statements in the article are infuriating. Yes, CrossFit can be done poorly and in a way that gets you injured, and I've heard stories of people burning out on working out this way because they didn't approach it thoughtfully (competing with your neighbor instead of listening to your own body, not scaling appropriately, etc.).
But that's sure as hell not how our box does it. Readers of the article are certainly going to walk away thinking Margie was "hobbling along in a foot brace" because of CF, when in fact it was Brazilian jiujitsu. Or that we like to haze newbies, when in fact David will tell anyone and everyone, no matter how long they've been taking classes, to smile and not make crazyface when the burpees start hurting. You stick your tongue out at him and you keep going. 😉
From my very first class I felt 100% welcome here. I never thought a gym was a place you made friends until I started coming to SBK.
Noah says
Wow did I get it at work today…!
I'm friends with Calla, who wrote the story, and think she did a pretty good job, with some gaffes. It read like lots of other "mainstream" articles about Crossfit gyms. Its easy to get dazzled by the gratuitous meat eating, the warehouse feel, the tires and sledges, and miss the quiet heart of what makes the gym tick. If she had spent a week or a month at the gym I don';t think theres any way she misses that, or realizes that the "no pain face" isn't some get tough mantra, but a joke about the nearness of pain/ecstasy expressions.
I think for spending a few hours with us Calla did pretty good. She nailed the community aspect, which is often totally omitted from similar stories, and the gaffes like Margie's foot were harmless synaptic leaps, not intentional distortions. She also emailed me personally to let me know that her editor leaned on her to put in some more "cult" stuff.
All in all, if it brings some good press or exposure to our way of life and the House That David Built (thanks Samir), I'm all in, which is why I arranged it in the first place. I'm also happy that the picture that made it up was just me standing there with the sledge, and not the numerous ones where it was draped over my shoulder like I'm John Henry or something and where I had my leg up like Captain Morgan. Phew.
