Hey all,
Does anyone have before/after photos from the Primal Quest that they’d be willing to show off at my paleo talk on Sunday? I am happy to obscure your face if you don’t want to reveal your identity.

Thank you!!

I wanted to be a Veterinarian…until I realized that there would be some animals that I couldn’t help and would have to put to sleep.
Laurel says
My plan was to buy a castle with my best friend Rhiannon, then purchase and reconstruct the furniture and clothes etc. of the time when the castle was built. We would then live in the castle, in appropriate costume and have it open to the public during the day.
Later career thoughts included zoologist, ACLU lawyer and Economics professor… still keep changing my mind.
Jim says
I’ve always wanted to be James Bond, and that hasn’t changed.

***BIRTHDAY BRUNCH ANNOUNCEMENT***
Malcolm’s birthday is the 6th of May, so in celebration we are planning to have brunch at Palo Santo on Sunday May 9th. We’ll aim for an 12:30 brunch. I realize that this is mother’s day, which probably precludes some of you from coming, BUT, for those of you who are free, please come celebrate with us.
Let me know if you can attend, as I will need to make reservations soon. (Laurel AT crossfitsouthbrooklyn DOT com)

My career plans as a small child.
Ages 4-7 I was going to be either a math professor or a rocket scientist.
Ages 12-15 Massage Therapist.
Can’t really figure out the connection.
Tal says
Malcolm, there is no connection but a simple explanation:4-7 : not interested in women12-15: interested in women

Artist. When I was 4 I was engaged to marry a boy named Lorin and we were going to move to Montana and be cowboys/cowgirls and artists. (I picked Montana because it was my favorite state in my US map puzzle, I think.)I broke up with Lorin after a few months, but kept the artist dream until roughly high school. (Lorin and I stayed good friends.)

I wanted to be an architect – How boring (hahaha).
If the architect deal didn’t work out my fallback was to own an art gallery/coffee shop. Considering I drink enough coffee to feasibly fiscally support a small coffee shop I say this dream was a minor success as well.
Scott J. says
I wanted to play centerfield for the Mets or striker for Liverpool. Like Ash, I still long for the glory of scoring a goal in front of 50,000.

I tried a few different things. I settled on being a nerd. I fly that flag with pride.

@ Michele –
Agreed. They go through that whole thing talking about bf% and showing lots of photos, but only in one of the write-ups did they mention being able to do a pullup. No mention of changes in weight moved, and none of their highlighted women gained weight.
I would guess for most of the women involved the gained abilities are more exciting that the aesthetic changes.

I still want to do a lot of things. I havent quite decided if Im too old and too much into fatherhood to make a career change…
But I’d love to be a world traveler.
@ Malcolm and Michele I agree with your critiques on the blog–but I’m thinking they got across exactly what they wanted marketing wise.
I mean the gym is in Orange County.

I am told that at the age of 3 I really wanted to be a frog. Once I learned that was not in the cards, fireman was next on the list. I am still searching for my true calling.

@Malcolm and ShawnS: thanks for the commiseration. I blame the box more than the women, but the whole thing makes me kinda sad.

Hey, people, sleep is as important as diet and exercise for ideal body composition:http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/27/health/27real.html(not to mention mental health, physical ability, etc., etc.)
ShawnS says
@Charlotte
Like I posted last night I definitely need more sleep.
Hard trying to find that with a 7-530 workday and still trying to fit in things like family and Crossfit.
I work a shorter schedule in the summer so I plan to take full advantage.
Any ideas? Cooking meals in advance? Are you and Nick able to sleep pretty well with Linus?
I think my avg now is 5.5-6 hours during the week and 7 hours on weekends.

Justin Flynn says
Michelle, Your comments are out of line, and I see nothing wrong with women being proud of a “hot” body while also kicking ass performance wise.
Check out our commment section today as this has been a hot topic

and another CF box that found our CF Women page quite inspiring.

if anyone can find the connection here, i’d love to be enlightened!

@michele and others who commented on the occ women’s page…
i read through it the other day and while it does talk a whole lot about % of body fat lost and show transformation photos promoting vanity, it does also mention in each of the video clips how those women interviewed had increased muscle mass and were able to move amounts of weight they had never thought possible before.
sometimes women are, in my opinion, afraid to jump into crossfitting because they don’t want to get ‘bulky’ or it seems crazy or too hard. “i could never do what you do” are words i have heard come out of friends’ mouths. i think this article (and the video clips, if you watched them) are showing women of various ages and athletic backgrounds who have transformed their bodies AND increased their performance – and are doing movements and lifting weights they never thought they could. they are definitely NOT ‘bulky’ and i think may change some women’s perceptions of the program. women CAN be strong and fit and lean and have muscle and lift heavy things and be proud of that.
Jess says
well said Steph!
Charlotte says
Ditto Jess! But, um, I don’t think Michelle’s comments were “out of line.” I think she’s entitled to say she hates the post. We’re not in Arizona….
@Shawn: No good sleep being had in this house. Well, sometimes. But it’s a struggle, too. That article reminds me that in fact making sleep a priority can be more important than making exercise a priority. Something to think about.

DEADLIFT: 1-1-1-1-1
warmup: droms, kb swings, p/u
135×5, 225×3, 315×1, 325×1, 335×1, 345×1 (pr)
called it a day after 4 attempts. the 345 felt really heavy. don’t think i had the 350 today. next time
BENCH PRESS: 5-5-5-5-5
45×5, 75×5, 105×5, 125x5x5
kept it pretty light on the bench press since I’ve been very sporadic with my gym attendance. shoulder felt OK through all reps which is the most important thing.

At one point in grade school, I was torn between being the president or a bus driver. Neither one of those panned out. I didn’t figure out I wanted to be a writer until about age 24 or so.
Re: Michele & the OC gals – Hey, Orange County is a different place from Brooklyn. The CF box is different. The people are different. It would make sense that how they market it would also be different. At the end of the day, I think we’d all agree that strong is beautiful. (p.s. Call me, O.C. ladies!)
Oh, and I made up yesterday’s deadlifts today. New PR of 270.
.DMG says
@shawn those hours are pretty good man. like charlotte, not a lot of good sleep going on in our house.
very nice video. ravel adds a calm to some of those insane movements.

Also… “If you bring your bike to CrossFit, please do not block the front desk or refrigerator with it.”
Considering that we’ve also been told not to put them by the couches, can we get some kind of update on whether or not we’re getting a bike rack outside?

Great to be back at CFSBK after too long away. Thanks for a great class Margie!
I wanted to be a dolphin when I grew up – I guess Mak the frog and I could have been friends. When my preschool teacher clued me in on the utter impossibility of that dream, I thought about becoming a supreme court justice. Fortunately I figured out that I didn’t want to be a lawyer or judge before I actually went to law school.

DeadliftsSo, today didn’t go as expected because I can’t do bar math.w/up (65×3, 85×3, 95×3)115×1 PR125F120x1 PR120x1125FI was going to do sets across (x3) at 105 or 110, but what happened was I put the 35# plates on the bar, thinking it was 105 and then I pulled it and accidentally got a PR.
Then I did double under practice for 12 minutes and–dum da dum!–I linked them for the first time ever. My max was 4, so another new PR. What a night at the gym!
As for this whole debate today, one of the best parts about CF is getting stronger and the confidence that comes with that. But I MIGHT trade my first pull-up for abs you could grate cheese on. Just sayin’.
