Saturday's Prospect Park 5K Run will meet at 9:30am at the Grand Army Plaza entrance. Chris Fox and David Mcgrath will be organizing the run so that everyone's stuff will be safe and no one gets left behind. There will be an optional brunch available afterwards. Have Fun!
Remember that there are No classes at the Lyceum this weekend. We will return to our normal schedule on Monday.

That link has to be one of the strangest “fitness” things I’ve ever seen. “Take your favorite gym workout outside”…Uh, go for a walk or a run? This beats the jackhammer/vibrator dumbbell and the ab lounge combined.
Start buying canned food and learning to swim, the end is nigh.
Jr says
I am reading “America’s Great Depression” by Murray Rothbard
I highly recommend it!
Malcolm says
I am currently reading Karl Popper’s “The logic of scientific discovery”, so far awesome. I am also rereading “Good Calories Bad Calories” by Gary Taubes, and am getting even more out of it the second time through.
Charlotte says
I’m reading Malcolm’s other copy of “Good Calories, Bad Calories,” I guess. I’m also reading “Three Trapped Tigers,” by Guillermo Cabrera Infante, a Cuban novelist.
Nick and I bought a car-seat adapter thingy for our jogging stroller yesterday, if we can figure it out by 9:30 tomorrow we’ll try to make the run!(Funny story: the adapter was for sale on Park Slope Parents Classified. The seller turned out to be Daniel Goldstein, the director–and only real member I think–of Develop Don’t Destroy Brooklyn, the major group fighting the Nets/Atlantic Yards disaster. He and his wife are the only people living in their whole building; Ratner bought everyone else out.)

If anybody wants to go back to the well and either raise money for prostate cancer, or donate, I am growing a moustache for “Movember.”

I just read Born to Run twice. Steven Pressfield’s Gates of Fire is probably next, and I need to finish Blood Meridian at some point. Not that I have time for any of this between work and grad school.
See everyone tomorrow morning.
Malcolm says
Charlotte since it was released I think I have bought 5 copies of “Good Calories Bad Calories” as I give away copies to friends or family. I got a Kindle copy this time so I can read it on the train on my phone.
Steph W says
Best American Short Stories 2009 edited by Alice Sebold …meh. Definitely not my favorite edition.A Race Like No Other by Liz Robbins…she signed a copy for me at the race expo. Lovely person. And I am really enjoying the book so far.
Bethany says
Just started the second book of 2666 by Roberto Bolaño.
gabrus says
Just finished ‘Playing the Enemy’ which got turned into the movie Invictus, about Nelson Mandela, and the Springboks world cup win over the All Blacks.
Great Read.
Also, Rugby and everything stops after this weekend. So I will be back, sorry for being a flake.
Just so everyone knows I never emailed the people who worked out NYSC when I missed training.
katie says
halfway through “Beirut to Jerusalem.” I feel a lot smarter already.
and I’ll be at the run tomorrow! Only because I hate running so much.
Scott says
I recently started Denis Johnson’s “Tree of Smoke” after finally finishing Howard Zinn’s “A People’s History of the United States”.
I hope to be at the run tomorrow as long as my knee and foot feel allright (damn kick checks in muay thai).
David Mak says
I just finished reading the Times magazine and the real estate section from last Sundays NYT. I miss reading but can’t seem to find the time anymore. It took me like a month to read The Omnivore”s Dilemma.
Becca says
I have no words for the level of absurdity that the treadmill bike represents! It is wrong in so many ways. Pointless.
Bethany – 2666 is on my reading shortlist. How do you like it so far?
jack says
Currently reading “Why Die”, about the great running coach Percy Cerutti, who was sick until his 40’s when he changed his life through rigorous fitness training. Leo told me about the book, and when I saw that it was out of print and really expensive, he graciously loaned it to me, so thanks Leo- It’s an inspirational read so far.

I am currently re-reading “The Harmonic Experience”, which is by far the single best book on music and harmony I’ve ever read. It’s beautifully written despite being very technical. it’s pretty much the “starting strength” of tonal harmony.
if anyone is interested, one of my favorite all time books is by the same author, “The Listening Book” by W.A. Mathieu. It’s a collection of short essays about listening, music, and practicing. I’ve given out lots of copies to nonmusicians who have gotten a lot out of it. definitely in my top 5 all time books.
Sarah says
I’m reading #4 in the fantasy series by George R.R. Martin. It’s called A Feast for Crows. The series is called A Song of Ice and Fire. It’s very nerdy stuff, think Lord of the Rings. It is truly awesome though, I recommend.
Richard Spencer says
I don’t know who “Jr.” is, but I’m glad people are reading Rothbard during this Great Depression Season!
lapenguina says
about to start Wolf Boy by Evan Kuhlman. “The phone call informing them of Francis’s death came while Stephen was watching a Godzilla movie on TV and his sister was twirling her baton about ten feet away from him and his mother was in the kitchen making a carrot cake and his father was putzing around in the den, trying to think of something to do.”

Kettlebell coffee mug!
Joe says

Sarah, I’m a huge Song of Ice and Fire fan! I’ve probably read all the currently released books four times or so. Kathy’s really into it as well. Do you know that HBO and the BBC are working on a miniseries?
I just finished reading The Hunger Games, which is a YA novel that was very talked about this year. Amazing book.
Fox says
I’m working my way through Diagnosis and Treatment of Movement Impairment Syndromes by Shirley Sarhmann…
Last fiction book I read was Ender’s Game by Scott Card.
I am lame.
Chris says
Reading “I Can Has Cheezburger?” Dense, but ultimately rewarding.ps. I was George RR Martin’s book publicist for a dozen years. happy to share road stories from tours with any fans.
Laurel says
Fox – you are not lame. Ender’s Game is great and the Diagnosis book sounds super interesting.
I’m reading “How the Mind Works” by Steven Pinker. I picked it up awhile ago, got into it, then got busy and had to start over, but it is quite interesting. I’m reading “good calories, bad calories” on my iphone on my commute and I’ve been reading this ridiculous fantasy series that is basically a retelling of the Napoleonic Wars WITH added dragons. The first one is called “His Majesty’s Dragon,” and it was free for the kindle, and therefor free for my phone. It took me months to start reading it because I didn’t like the first three pages much, but Malcolm devoured the whole series so eventually I pushed through and got hooked.
David says
i walked an unread copy of ‘Dune’ out of mike’s room yesterday with plans to start it on the train ride to nj but ended up forgetting it at home.
ive re-read about 80% of practical programming in the last three days.
Is dune good? Im kind of in the mood for some real whaked out sci fi type stuff.
Jeremy says
Dune is not good. Dune is awesome.
Jess says
Love the kettlebell mugs! Hate the treadmill bike!
I also just finished reading Ender’s Game which I really enjoyed. (David–fun sci-fi if you want to borrow…) Now, I’m reading Blink by Malcolm Gladwell.
Morning run: 5k in 26:38Just call me the “Flash”. I’ll miss running with you all tomorrow morning.
Afternoon WOD at local crossfit:3 rounds for time of:30 Wallballs (10lbs, 10ft target)30 jumping pullups30 double undersTime: 16:05
In general, wall balls blow and today they nearly made me want to give up. I missed the cutoff time of 15 mins but at least I finished. Not a fan of jumping pullups, and today my double unders blew.
Regan, have an awesome time with the Comic Con this weekend. You’ve worked so hard and I’m sure it’s going to be a huge success!
Gabriel says
I am reading The Age of Regan: The Fall of the Old Liberal Order. 1964 thru 1980. Awesome.
Looking forward to the run tomorrow!
Nick Peterson says
I did my 5 x 3 weighted pull-ups yesterday (Friday), because I’d missed them: #25, #25 (palms facing me), #30, #30, #30 (palm facing me).
Then I did three sets of holding myself at the top, unweighted, and counted 1-1,000, 2-1,000… Got roughly 15″, 50″ (with palms facing me), and 25″.
I’m currently reading “How Cities Work,” a pretty good book by a journalist. There are a lot of crap urban planning books out there, so it’s refreshing to read something good in the field.
For fantasy buffs, I recommend the “His Dark Materials” trilogy. The first book is “The Golden Compass,” and was turned into a (crappy) movie. It’s children’s fantasy, but it’s mind-blowing. The author, Phillip Pullman, has said that there are some topics too big for adult fiction.
