It is a SPA and it is a CASTLE! Plus the great deep tissue massages available make it manly…
I haven’t actually been in a while and am getting overdue for a deep tissue massage.

I just loved the videos of the NEQ winners, thanks for posting that David. I was very curious as to what athletic backgrounds they had. I have my work cut out for me.

Ok, so since it’s a rest day, and since it’s my first day back from vacation, I wanted to post my (wife’s) thoughts about the ibuprofen/NSAID pain reliever comments posted about a week ago- basically, ignore the CF SF article and use ibuprofen.
My wife’s a pharmacist, who through the course of her studies has come to think that advil (ibuprofen) is a wonder drug. So naturally, I couldn’t help but chide her that she might have been dead wrong about the usefullness of advil for treating my post-Murph muscle soreness.
She looked at me like I had half a brain, and took it upon herself to actually read the study that was cited in the article David linked. And, because she’s smarter than me, she also decided to search medical article databases to look for other articles that came to the same conclusion.
The article that the CF SF link was based on led her to believe that the conclusions drawn about Advil are, in short, complete nonsense.
First, the sample size was 24 marathon runners. They were further split into three groups of 8- control, tylenol, NSAID. Then, they were given their assigned drug (or placebo) prior to the race. The findings were such that the tylenol and NSAID groups both lacked the same “healing” indicator in their blood post-race. This is noteworthy since tylenol and NSAIDs work in completely different delivery systems, so she said it’s unlikely that the NSAIDs were also causing the other problems the CF SF article mentioned. It’s also fairly unreasonable to assume that the physiology of crossfitters and post-workout reactions are the same as marathon runners, right?
Furthermore, of course the indicators were missing- NSAIDs work to reduce inflammation in soft tissue, and it’s the inflammation in the first place that tells your body it needs to heal that area. So, the NSAIDs prevented inflammation, the body didn’t know it was damaged, and it didn’t send any healing proteins. Is anyone else surprised by this? Taking them prior to working out may indeed be counterproductive. But the fact is that they have been prescribed for post-workout pain- that is, after muscles are inflamed and the healing proteins are present. The key here is that the inflammation is your body’s way of telling you you’re hurt- it responds by trying to fix itself and at that point the inflammation is only residual swelling that delays further healing. Taken post-pain, the NSAIDs work to reduce the inflammation so your body can heal quickly.
The second article she found was equally dubious in both design and testing, no need to get into it here. And there’s thousands of articles out there supporting the benefits of post-workout NSAIDs to help healing. If you’re worried about long-term effects on your joints, then don’t take it around the clock everyday. Take it around the clock for the day or so after a really killer pain sets in, and let your body heal.

Tuesday is laundry night, not exactly relaxing. But Friday night is typically fancy cocktail night. My favorite place is Clover Club on Smith Street.

Ian- good stuff. In the endurance world the saying goes “Tylenol before a race and Advil afterwards”. I couldn’t imagine giving up my Vitamin I.
Brian – x2 on the intern thing.

well on last Tuesday’s “rest day” we went English country dancing and got rather sweaty, although this was due predominantly to the heat of the room… typically we go and buy meat and I sometimes go dancing during my lunch break. Fridays normally involve food, lots of tasty food, and attempting not to drink much while being social.

i usually just like to spend time with the family and catch up with housework I cant finish other days cause my crappy schedule.
Malcolm that pic of your dad is awesome. Im gonna tru to get my dad to join crossfit. I going to try and bring him to foundations in July when he visits. Theres a couple of boxes back home I think he should check out, but not sure he’d just go on his own before trying crossfit out.
