Today is Robb’s birthday and the big NorCal party. We’ll be doing some unknown workout, but Robb has to snatch his age at bodyweight. With a busted up finger.
John C. and I decided to brave the weather (31 degrees, 25 w/ windchill) and went to the old playground (which is a lot dirtier then I remember) to do The Deck Of Death wod…
Each shuffle a deck of cards (52 cards + 2 jokers) and start the chrono on your watch. Each numbered card is face value of reps, aces are 11 , and face cards are 10.
Diamonds = Push upsSpades = Pull upsHearts = BurpeesClubs = Sit upsJokers = typically rowing but we subbed double-unders (me: 100 per joker, John: 50)
So, if my math is correct, it’s 95 reps of the 4 suit exercises and 200/100 double unders).
John- 42:25Erik- 41:52
One of the rude things about this workout is when you get a string of the same suits. Like at one point I drew 3 face cards and in 8 of push ups in a row. Still, it’s a lot of fun.
At brunch the endorphins kicked in big time. Felt gloriously high. Had a bunless burger with tomatoes and broccoli.
Then I went to the Y and went rather light after all those push ups and burpees.
this felt great, the encouragement on the last rep from everyone definitely helped me put it up. I would have failed it if I were doing this by myself.
Working on setting my breathing at the top of the press rather than the bottom to keep the bar moving btw reps – definitely helps. Thanks Jeremy & Shane! I stalled for a second too long on the two heavier weights and couldn’t move them up again. Next time.

Wow, thanks guys for the wishes– I’ll tell you… I will never gripe about the cold in the lyceum again… todays race made the lyceum feel downright balmy. As i had nervously anticipated, my knee did not play nice over the 13 miles and by mile 11 with both the painful cold and my knee, it became a real battle to finish. I came in a full 15 mins off my half PR, which isn’t great, but having been told by a physical therapist some years ago that I was never going to run again, finishing still felt really awesome.
I am supposed to run the Bronx half in 2 weeks, so hopefully my 2 weeks on the road and weekend back at CFSB will help keep that plan in the air.
Have a great week training, all… and thanks to Shane and Jacinto for all their great coaching this week. You guys are awesome. It’s still amazing to me that we can have 3 awesome coaches all gone at once and still have the incredible caliber of coaching throughout. So thanks, guys. Now off to get some more warm tea in me…
