Behind the Desk: Josh S.
You all love the Underneath the Hoodie series and now we’re bringing back the Behind the Desk series, about our beloved and much appreciated Front Desk staff. These CrossFitters take care of the important duties of checking in our members, handling walk-ins, tidying up after classes, and so many other things that it would take forever to list them. They are the glue that holds this gym together.
A couple weeks ago, it was Janelle. And now (drum roll, please), introducing…
Name: Josh Schneiderman
Where were you born and where did you grow up: Born and raised in Northeast Philly.
How long have you been CrossFitting, and how did you arrive at CFSBK? A few months shy of two years. A few summers ago, I did a foundations cycle at an affiliate in the Philly ‘burbs and then never returned for a bunch of reasons. I moved to Brooklyn in the fall of 2012 and quickly grew bored with my routine of running, pull-ups, and push-ups. I knew I wanted to get back into CrossFit, so I signed up for another foundations cycle at CFSBK. I didn’t really shop around, because we seemed like the best (and we are).
What are you up to when you’re not at 597 Degraw Street: Teaching English at Hunter College. I’m also finishing a PhD in American literature at the CUNY Graduate Center.
First album that you loved: Bruce Springsteen, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.
“Ask me about that time I…” Hitchhiked around the Virgin Islands.
Favorite restaurant or bar in Brooklyn: It’s a toss-up between Guero’s (tacos) and Doris in Bed-Stuy.
Favorite and least favorite lift: Favorite: clean. Least favorite: thruster.
Any Front Desk PSAs you’d like to share? Brooklyn Boulders is at the end of the block on the right.

The PSA made me laugh. I can't tell you how many people walk into our gym everyday, look around for a few seconds looking confused and say one of the following things..
"Is this brooklyn boulders?"
"Hi Im here for a birthday party"
"Hi Im here for my learn the ropes course"

YAY JOSH. And I once had someone come in and start stripping down to their climbing clothes before realizing that we weren't Brooklyn Boulders. You'd think the giant mural on the garage door would help…

Was tired, so these felt a little slow.
WOD

Deadlift – 275
Burpee over bar

Was quick. The burpees started to get tough (and my quads started to get tired) about halfway through the round of 9
Tabata hollow holds were abby fun.
Then a quick tabata aerodyne cool-down – got 57 calories.

Last night. Olympic lifting. I graduated from hang power snatches to pulling from the floor. Progress! Unfortunately, the groove I was feeling in transitioning from the hang to the power position disappeared. Frank had me work the movement from the floor slowly and required that I keep the bar in contact with my legs at all time, stripping a few layers of skin off in the process. Not sure how many reps I did (8-10), but they all were at 88# except for one at 110#. Was starting to feel marginally better at the end of the session, though I'm still having to concentrate a ton to hit the positions. Clean & jerk was mostly at 176#. Cleans were feeling wonky today. Need to keep the bar in close and be patient in getting it to the power position. Jerks felt mostly good, though I was having problems keeping my back foot turned in. I did get a "nice jerk" from Frank, so my night was a success.

I love a good snatch day. Worked up to 110#, was getting all sorts of dizzy after the OHS, maybe holding my breath too long. Skipped the WOD for Crash B workout.

Nice and small 6am class with Jess and David
Some fun Summer Camp Style Warm Ups. I like when the routine gets broken up every once in a while.
Performance Snatch complex at 135#. Jess observed that I was allowing myself to get soft at the bottom which is a habit I thought I broke but it looks like it is sneaking back. Something to focus on.
NFT Work was not too bad. I made it through 4 rounds and worked up to 50# for the presses and 135# for the reverse lunges.

Snatch
Drills… Press, btn snatch pp, ohs, snatch drop, a few sotts presses
Complex: HH snatch + hang snatch + ohs
63, 63, 63, 73, 83, 88, 93
This felt hard at the first weight but got dialed in. Focused on brace, big chest, loose arms and getting DOWN. Felt snappy today.
NFT work… Did three rounds of the lunges, t2b, and then a 15 cal row instead of press since I'm pressing tmw
Cash out was fun. 2 rds, 1 min forearm plank, 1 min arch hold, unbroken with about 30 sec rest between.
3 MU attempts, all failed. Shoulders a bit too fatigued to commit today. Good to practice while already a bit smoked though.

Love the FD profiles. Josh is great and has the second most tattoos up there, next to Silva. He's a pretty rad dude, I know because our dogs told us so, and if Tucker and Molly like someone they must be pretty cool. Plus, funniest PSA yet.

Josh is awesome. I will never, ever forget the day last year when we were doing our last 2K test before CRASH Bs and Josh got me through that last 500M. Absolutely no way I would have even finished the race without him shouting at me. He also listens to my crap at parties, if I remember correctly. Lol.
Oly Cycle today.
Snatch- 2 x shift from the knee, power snatch, OH squat, 5 second hold.
33 x 3, 53 x 3, 63 x 3 x 5.
Clean from hang, 3 x jerks.
33, 63, 73 , 83 x 5.
That's all for today.

Hard being snappy today after that deadlift workout. Anything involving my hamstrings and back was like moving molten lead.

135 on the lunges, 50 on the presses
skipped cashout

Nature Valley granola bars suck…really though, they're not even that nutritious and they crumble…everywhere. Good luck eating that one on the subway.
C&J: 140×3
Was adjusting to the 45# man bar. Landing forward on my cleans still, pulling a bit early. Need to remember keep my shoulders back. Also working on "controlling the dip", emphasized by Fox and Ro. This feels completely different than I used to jerk. Can't believe I've been doing it wrong for this long! 2 out of 3 were still cruddy. One of them felt solid. I'll get it eventually.

Warmup was FUN!
Fitness Power Snatch + OH squat. Worked up in increments of 5# from 53#. Failed the snatch at 83#. Dropped down to 78# to work on form. Failed. Dropped down to 73# got snatch form back. Went back up to 78# and pressed out the bar. Did two OH squats at this weight again just because, was about to drop down to 73# again, but ran out of time. Ro and Whit pointed out I'm not turning over quick enough. Next time, I will work up and stay at 73# until I can turn over faster and lock out.
Levers were HARD! Press with 25# DBs. Lunges with the 33# bar, then did 53#. Can probably do more weight on the lunges but don't feel comfortable with them.

thanks for the kind words, y'all. I once joked to Jess that we should change our name to CrossFit Not Brookln Boulders but I wasn't joking.
Also, Kate R. and I had pretty much the same haircut when we were children– same bangs (or "fringe" if you're from Montana).
