Behind The Desk: Lindsay Silva
Here is the next installment in our new series called Behind the Desk, about our beloved and much appreciated Front Desk staff. These CrossFitters take care of the important duties of checking in our members, handling walk-ins, tidying up after classes, and so many other things that it would take forever to list them. They are the glue that holds this gym together.
Full name: Lindsay Kathleen Silva
Where were you born and where did you grow up: Born in Dallas. Grew up in Dallas, Oklahoma City, Phoenix and Brooklyn (I’m still growing up, right?)
First album that you loved: Nirvana’s Nevermind. I loved it with the fire of a million suns. I think I wore out my cassette tape. However. My earliest musical memory is rocking out to the Hair soundtrack on vinyl with my older cousin. I think we probably loved that album.
What are you up to when you’re not at 597 Degraw Street: Happily slaving away on my PhD in Neuroscience. Or seeing bands play. And traveling to see bands play. And forcing others to accompany me to see bands play.
“Ask me about that time I…”: Botched that job in Nigeria and ended up working as an unlicensed Private Investigator in Miami while trying to figure out who burned me.
Oh wait. That’s “Burn Notice.” I’m far less interesting but ask me anything. I’ll probably answer truthfully. And if I don’t, you’ll know because I have no poker face.
Earth is about to implode but aliens on a previously undiscovered planet named Euripides want to preserve one artifact from humans. What would you offer them? ALL THE CAT GIFS!
Favorite shade of blue: The Caribbean Sea
Favorite lift: Whatever lift I’m currently attempting. I’m an equal opportunity lift lover. Although I have to admit I kinda only love the snatch because, well… it’s called a snatch.

Think the empty barbell is tough? Here’s a 400lb Overhead Squat
Luca says
just out of curiosity, why would that Aukhadov dude push jerk and not split jerk?
Fox says
@Luca – Style preference. By his third attempt he's moving closer to a squat jerk. That boy is strong as shit.
Lindstar! Despite her affinity for emo-punkish boy bands, I really like having her around the gym and up at the ole FD. Plus she's a really great dancer (I would know), you should see her "bodyweight squat PR" dance. Amazing!

I for one, like having Lindstar around BECAUSE of her affinity for emo-punkish boy bands. #ALKALINETRIOforlife

Squat jerk is where it is at. Everyone should train their squat jerk.

Aww yeah, Lindstar! The keeper of endless excellent stories, the one who found an actual Taco costume for the Fighting Tacos (purchased only in our hearts), and fellow lover of snail porn.
Some makeup stuff… I didn't post on Wednesday because I was irritated with my squatting and only felt safe going up to 175#. I think it also has to do with collapsing a bit through my torso at the bottom, so, KH, I'm also coming for you.
LAST NIGHT WAS SO FUN and for the next six weeks, I'll probably be living for Thursdays at 7:30. Came in way early and did a bunch of mashing and yoga, and watching of Fox to try stealing his form via a nonexistent form of eye osmosis. Worked up to 98# and used that for the performance EMOTM with Whit. Great cues from Noah to stay tighter in my shoulders and back right out of the gate. I've been doing 4×10 sets of band pull-aparts at work about three times a week to get stronger in my shoulders, and I think it's helping.
I think I'm going to do a 5K tonight around 7pm. If anyone wants to join, lemme know. 8:30-ish mile pacing? I would leave from my apt at 4th and Union, but happy to meet at the gym. Though I am not one of those people who runs and chats, just one of those people who likes peer pressure that makes me go faster. 🙂

Lindstar!!!
On a warm September evening in 2012, I walked into a bar by my house and met this strong- looking chick with amazing tattoos, through some mutual friends. In an effort to shed some 'quitting smoking' lbs, I had recently taken up running but that evening I had run too far and hurt my knee. Nothing a few gins and not running for a while wouldn't sort out, but Lindsay and I got talking about CrossFit which I had read about in Well Fed but knew nothing about. It was really obvious how much she loved it so I was inspired and I followed up and here we are.
Thanks Lindsay for literally changing my life and becoming a great friend since.

6am. Tackled Saturday's spicy back-off week metcon. Managed 194 reps: 131 on movement one and 63 on movement two. Pretty sure this one is going to leave some soreness.

Woot! My show wifie front and center! Too many stories with us but latest favorite: Me: "uhhh did you talk me into seeing a boy band show?" Linds: "No! Well.. maybe.. yes." I still went that is how awesome she is. The best Behind The Desk evarrrr <3

Damn you Lindsay! I was so curious about the botched job in Nigeria/PI work. I would not be surprised if something just as exciting has actually happened to you.

Another great BTD! Love seeing Lindsay's face behind the desk when I walk in.
Big make-up post:
Push-pressed on Tuesday with McDowell (3 people in class!): worked up to 185×3 with some room to spare. The quad-focus of the past cycles has made a huge difference here, even as my strict press has stayed about the same.
HBBS for me this cycle, as I signed up for my first Oly meet in March: worked to 300×1, with a fail at 307.5. This matches what I hit during crush week. I think this is head issue more than a strength issue.
Love the EMOTM work. Partnered with PR — excellent to have his eyes on my reps. Worked at 85kg (187lbs). Rep 11 felt amazing. Only one press out in there. Still hitting EITHER front/back balance or left/right balance, but rarely both. I have to tell myself to really go wide just to get an extra inch or two of left/right split. I would feel confident opening a meet at 85kg now, though.
Excited to be doing the Oly work in the context of training for a meet. It gives the extra push to make the reps "three white lights" good, and not just "CrossFit Open" good.

I personally think the Squat jerk looks like a way simpler motion than the split Jerk. Both Lu and Apti make it look beautiful. I think if you have the mobility the squat jerk might be the way to go. There is way less room for error however, and if the weight gets forward at all you're going to lose it. I am going to be incorporating more power jerks and even try squat jerking a bit to drill keeping the weight over my heels for when I split.

He snatches 200 lbs over his body weight……and he's smaller than me!!!!!! I love this guy.
Also, I got to watch the women's weightlifters this past week end before Todd and David went. There was a super cute 9 yr old girl competing, as well as some strong teens. A 12 year old boy got an over body weight c+j pr on his last attempt. Also my new real person idol, TC(tiny coach) I think that is a David nickname, her real name is Lynette? She was so cool from her hair down to her praying mantis set up on the bar. Weighing in at 101 pounds she clean and jerked 146 pounds!!!!!!!

I love the time I told Lindstar I had just come back from Oklahoma City and she just said "what a dump". Also the time we talked fondly about Converge. Which, btw, is pretty far from being a boy band. Lindsay is great.
6am with NickDowell
did tomorrow's couplet. Had a perverse impulse to use #30 on movement number one, which led to 8 or 9 no-reps. Got 149 reps all together, 74 on the first movement, 75 on the second.

First – nice write up on Lindsay! You mean your life isn't a Brooklyn version of Burn Notice..?
Second – we are selling a big ole custom made barn door, 8'-0" x 4'-0" (ie HUGE, depth about 1-3/8"), no hardware included (but you can find kits online very easily). We have been using it as a sliding door, and upgraded to a thicker one so now this one needs to go! It's in good shape, side and top rails with interior wood slats. Came from Utah. Can be disassembled and re-purposed (headboard? table? wood slat backdrop to the best painting you've ever painted, partition). If you, for some reason, are in the market for a big ass barn door – get in touch! astafivgas (at) gmail (dot) com.
I can send ya photos or you can come see it in person. It's currently blocking all our bookcases and our fireplace.
